What is the SmartFreshSM Quality System?
AgroFresh Inc.' patented SmartFresh technology is an innovative quality system used by growers and packer-shippers to help maintain the freshness and quality of produce, so more consumers can consistently enjoy high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables.

What are the benefits of using it?
The SmartFresh Quality System is a "freshness protection system” that guards against the natural elements that cause produce to over-ripen and lose quality. Fruits and vegetables produce a natural ripener, called ethylene, which eventually causes them to soften and over-ripen. The SmartFresh Quality System protects fruits and vegetables from ethylene, so freshness and quality are maintained longer.

What crops benefit from the SmartFresh Quality System?
The SmartFresh Quality System has been shown to be highly effective in mantaining the just-picked quality of a number of produce items, proven by its ability to maintain key indicators of freshness. Currently, the SmartFresh Quality System is used commercially with:

Apples - Apples stay crispy, crunchy, and juicy and maintain their just-picked firmness for longer.
Melons - Growers can harvest fully mature melons with great color and fewer sunken and discolored areas (SDAs).
Bananas - Bananas maintain their beautiful yellow color and delectable sweet flavor longer, so retailers can consistently offer the kind of bananas that are always in demand -- and consumers can enjoy them longer at home without browning.
Tomatoes - Tomatoes keep their distinct vine-ripened flavor, color and desirable firmness for longer periods of time than non-SmartFresh quality tomatoes, so consumers can enjoy tastier, plump, red tomatoes.
Kiwifruit - Kiwifruit maintain their desired firmness and characteristic flavor and appearance so consumers can enjoy them longer without softening or flavor loss.
Plums – Plums maintain their firmness and freshness during and after storage.
Persimmons – Usually sensitive and easily softening, SmartFresh quality persimmons maintain their quality during transport and their shelf life.

How do consumers benefit?
Consumers benefit by being able to enjoy and rely on the just-picked quality of fresh fruits and vegetables. This means consumers have greater access to consistently high-quality produce, leading to increased consumption for good health.

How does the SmartFresh Quality System benefit the produce industry?
The SmartFresh Quality System helps growers and packer-shippers to maintain the superior quality they work hard to provide through growing, packing and shipping. Maintaining this superior quality from the fields and orchards through the supply chain to retailers and consumers is a big challenge. The SmartFresh Quality System makes it possible to maintain just-picked quality while providing producers with the additional benefits of increased operational flexibility, reduced costs and new opportunities to grow their business.

How is the SmartFresh Quality System used?
SmartFresh technology is introduced while fresh produce is in storage, awaiting shipment to market -- and often right after harvest. A small amount of SmartFresh technology is dispersed in the air of the store rooms, and then it quickly disappears. It only takes 24 hours to lock in the freshness and quality of an entire room full of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Is the SmartFresh Quality System safe?
The SmartFresh Quality System is completely safe. SmartFresh technology has been rigorously and extensively reviewed by scientists, independent experts and government agencies in over 26 countries around the world. It has been found without exception to be safe for consumers, workers and the environment.

How do consumers respond to the SmartFresh Quality System?
In research done in both the United States and Europe, three out of four consumers said they preferred SmartFresh quality apples over non-SmartFresh quality apples. Consumer taste tests have proven time and again that consumers prefer SmartFresh quality produce because of its just-picked taste, texture and overall eating experience.

Where was SmartFresh technology developed?
The science behind this important enhancement for the produce industry was discovered by respected researchers at North Carolina State University, a leading American university for agricultural studies, where they studied the natural ripening process of apples in the 1990s. AgroFresh acquired the technology in the late 1990s, refined it, and developed highly beneficial commercial applications for the produce industry.

Where is the SmartFresh Quality System available?
The SmartFresh Quality System is sold to commercial fruit and vegetable producers, packer-shippers and retailers. It has been approved for use in every country in which AgroFresh has sought to make it available for sale, currently totaling more than 26. As worldwide demand for the SmartFresh Quality System continues to grow, the company will continue to seek additional registrations.
